Mountaineering, cycling, traveling, painting, as well as any other form of art, any other profession or occupation of man, can never be just the source of pure joy unless one is dedicated and devoted to it. We are talking about much stronger feelings.

Symbol of the project

The expedition is planned to begin on 01.07.2000., when the team of four members of M.A. "A.C.E" is going to depart from Nis and start a kind of sport-cultural " mission". In four months, our team will cross by bicycles 5000 km through Yugoslavia, Hungary, Austria, Italy, Switzerland, France, Spain and Morocco, via Belgrade, Budapest, Vienna, Bolzano, Lugano, Geneve, Lyon, Avignon, Barcelona, Madrid, Seville to Rabat. On our way we are going to cross the whole mountain range of the biggest massif in Europe - the Alps, and climb the following peaks: Gross Glockner (3792 m) - the highest peak in Austria, Monte Rosa (4634 m), Mont Blanc (4807 m) - the highest peak in Europe, Persh (2909 m), Pyrenees and one of highest peaks in Africa Jebel - Tubkal (4165 m) on Atlas in Morocco.
The sport character is not the only side of the voyage. M. A. "A.C.E" pays attention also to the part of the trip that will present this expedition to the public. A part of atmosphere, experience, smells and colours of the expedition is going to be turned into paintings, by one member of our team, Sasa Kolic, the painter, and is going to be presented to the European public by exhibitions in towns through which our expedition is passing.
The project is supported by the Ministry of Sport of Republic of Serbia, the Foreign office - Department of Sport and Cultural Co-operation of Federal Republic of Yugoslavia and Assembly of the City of Nis. Mountaineering Association "A.C.E" as well as sponsors are financing the project.
French Company Salomon and Austrian Company Red Bull GmbH are silver sponsors of the project.

About the title of the project "Spirit Vs. Nature"
(By Sasa Kolic)

Misunderstanding with nature lovers led us into this short analysis to explain our principles and attitude. The nature of the title itself can be understood in two ways:

1) the positive attitude towards the nature and the man (if we can so sharply distinguish between these). Can anybody call the destroying locust invasion unnatural or anti-natural? It is just their natural characteristic! They have also been created within and by the nature.

2) Multiple and highly changeable.
Quoting the Master of plastic art, Vasilij Kandinski, the founder of the modern art: "... How easy and against the will of the color composer, the nature enters the painting! Nature is easier to paint than to fight !" Civilization, science and technical inventions, the whole history of the humanity, bring us to the unbeatable fact of the man's alienation from nature. Was there any other way? Yes, probably. But we do not have the right to analyze the history, nor the real reason to do it. External split caused the split in the man himself, the split of the unity, and it is all connected: the external conflict is copied on to the inner-self and inner conflicts are copied on to the external nature.
The surface of many projects and appeals to save the environment, is very positive, noble and openhearted. Analyzing a little deeper, we find the damaging side of them:

1) Salving the satisfying (creating a false balance) and beautifying the reality. It became a sort of confession: after doing whatever I want, cut, burn, destroy, I can clean myself crying "Preserve the environment!", recycle some garbage, and open an ecological WC on the mountain. That's my foundation!

 2) Raising man above all (mainly his "charitable fight for nature"), overrating his powers, distancing him from reality - man is not preserving the nature, but his own survival.

 3) Intensifying the element of split: man fights for the environment and, on the other side, he destroys the same environment. This is an open inner war.
Expostulating against the common euphoria, we "fight" with spirit against nature. Doing this, the split in the inner-self is diminishing, and is supposed to stop the process of split between man and nature (referring to the environment). The element of salving the conscience is missing. We do not create a movement but the quest for the truth. In order to make a movement, it is inevitable to make certain rules, which will sooner or later be in conflict with the truth. The use of the rules makes them the dead symbol, which lost its meaning. Mentioning the "fight" we do not refer to destroying. Spirit is an enemy, neither to people nor to nature. Spirit is the deepest natural expression, and brings peace to both sides.

"... Have you heard of Lisbon earthquake? Well, Valter fought against it. He stood against it, yes. Refused to accept the brutal accident and that fact, fatum et factum, refused to capitulate before them... In the name of the spirit and common sense, he protested against that shocking natural excess, which took three quarters of a developed city, and thousands of human lives... You are surprised? You are smiling? You can be surprised in peace, but when we talk of smiling , let me tell you that it is highly improper. Valters attitude reflected the attitude of the old inhabitants who were aiming at the sky with their arrows...You see now engineer, this hostility of spirit Vs. nature."

Tomas Man - great German writer

Te fight with the spirit against the human nature embodied in apathy, inertia, hopelessness, deadness. Against fear and excuses. Against "hard times", helplessness, against the nature of things, readiness to capitulate and fall under the difficulties. Against the reality acceptance even when it is the enemy to spirit...

"The happiness of the people in the middle of the Pacific ocean does not depend on the climatic conditions nor on the political or economical situation. Their happiness depends on my smile sent to them over all the seas and mountains in between."

Milos Crnjanski
