"Sicevo is wine-growing centre, and there are vineyards stretching up the hillside all around the village. The vines, the rustic quietness and stone houses of the village, all give the impression that you have momentarily been transported to Provence. "
Laurence Mitchell, THE BRADT TRAVEL GUIDE SERBIA

SICEVO GORGE

icevo Gorge represents truly heaven for painters. Just 17 km east of Nis (second largest city in Serbia) formed by the Nisava River on its pass trough Svrljiske planine (Svrljig Mountain) lay one of most picturesque Gorge in Serbia, with dramatic views and colorful villages. Rural, live, colorful... rich with sounds and scents....

Sicevo village is situated on plateau above the first part of the Sicevo Gorge. It represents one of prettiest villages in Southeast Serbia.

Sicevo Gorge

rovance (as Bradt Travel Guide sais)... yes... but imagine Provance on Van Gogh’s paintings.... Imagine that you can see Provance as he used to saw it...
That you will discover in Serbia ... in the Sicevo Gorge.

And really, a unique natural beauty of this place inspired famous Serbian painter - expressionist Nadezda Petrovic to found the Fine Arts Colony in Sicevo village . Founded in 1905. this art colony represents one of the oldest institution of this type on Balkan Peninsula. This institution is active in now days too. Every year painters, from all over the world coming here to live and work in art community, creating some of the masterpieces right here.

Vineyard

n the other side of the Gorge, closer to Pirot town, on the slopes of same mountain, lay almost forgotten but not less beautiful Gradiste village. There, you will see houses of mud and hay, slow and peaceful life of dozen old villagers, who still live there... during the time they become unbreakable part of wonderful landscape.

City of Nis has quite a lot to offer: a number of good but inexpensive restaurants, a relaxed atmosphere, nearby spa resort... One of historical spot is for sure – Cele Kula (C in “Cele” read as in Italian “ciao”) – the Skull Tower . This memorial was erected in the 19th century by the Turks in order to scare Serbs to opposite their rule. Turks have build 3 m high tower using sculls of Serbian soldiers, gathered and skinned on the battlefield . Its construction followed the Battle of Cegar in 1809. at the time of the First Serbian Uprising.

PIROT'S RUG is completely hand made, exactly the same way as 400 years ago. It is not autochthonic but it is definitely unique. Its preciousness and originality is reflection of quality, lasting, patterns, colors and loom it is made on. Since it is hand made it provides a unique look. There are not two identical rugs and each one is authentic for itself. It is unique and unrepeatable- like a fingerprint!

rnaments, their shape and colors make Pirot’s rug recognizable everywhere in the world. They are full of symbolism and have Byzantine, Greek, Chinese and Turkish elements modified by Pirot’s spinners’ imagination and skills. On Pirot’s rug geometric motifs are dominating and one of the most often is a rhombus – ornament with pre-historic tradition that also appears on ceramics, metal and bronze. Stylized form of branched tree in many varieties could be found on all oriental rugs and it is familiar to all Eastern nations.

f you ask any of remaining women spinners in Pirot what is the most important thing for rug quality you’d always get the same answer – wool. It is considered that only wool from the Stara Planina Mountain’s sheep is appropriate for Pirot’s rug manufacture. There are two kinds of wool: fleece wool – sheared once in a year from living sheep, and sheet wool – taken off from leather of slaughtered sheep. Sheared wool classifies by its quality, it is washed in hot water, rinsed in cold and dried. After that, wool is manually combed and categorized: wool of fine quality is for weaving and the rest is for making woolen clothes.

Traditional Pirot Interior

pinning is done by a spindle and a distaff. Thicker fibers are used for rug base and they are not colored, unlike the thinner ones which are used for woof. Spun wool from the spindle is rewound on winder for straightening and after that it is winded into spools, which are later painted and whitened. Women from villages used to paint wool by themselves in nut’s and ash’s barks, as well as in onion scales. It’s been painted with natural colors for a long time, but recently aniline – final colors appeared. Old herbal colors were bright red (cinnabar), livid (indigo), bright blue and dark green, green, black, coffee-brown and yellow. After painting yarn is being carried to the Nisava River or a brook for fine washing and after that it is strained and dried.

ACE guest practice Spinning

eaving has been done mostly between Djurdjevdan (May 6th) and Mitrovdan (November 8th), it’s been done outdoor, and weaved rugs have had different dimensions. The beginning and the end of rug weaving were followed by some customs. Yarn preparing should have started on Monday as well as weaving itself, and the one who rugs were made for used to bring “zatkavalnik” – plentiful breakfast or lunch. After the rug is done a girl from ordering party’s house or the bride, whose wedding preparations a rug was for, would bring a round bread, cheese and onions.

And let us end  with one quotation.

“I will not serve that in which I no longer believe, whether it call it self my home, my fatherland, or my church. I will try to express myself in some mode of life or art as fully as I can and as holly as I can. Using for my defense the arms I will allow myself to use: silence, and exile, and cunning.
I do not fear to be along, or to be spurned for another, or to leave what I have to leave. I’m not afraid to make a mistake, even a great mistake, even a life long mistake, or perhaps for eternity too.
To live, to ear, to fail, to triumph... to recreate life out of life....
And on, and on, and on, and on...”

James Joyce in Portrait of Young Artist.
But also manifesto of your hosts in last 15 years. When we started our travels, we met a  guy who ironically said that this manifesto must be a manifesto of  very young artist when he can believe in that! Maybe... but we still believe in manifesto and living according our believes by traveling, organizing hiking and bicycling tours, painting... expressing ourselves in our mode of life and art...
